The Genesis of Symbolic Activity (About the Origins of Creativity in Anthropology)

The article discusses several questions con-cerning symbolic behavior and creativity as necessary components of human culture. Three different approaches are studied throughout the paper: brain mutation hypothesis(R. Klein), autistic theory of genesis of consciousness (E. Bleiber, J.Piaget, J. Borodai), and the methodological approach of the social anthropology. The presented article provides an analysis of certain problem fields within the framework of human evolution and the genesis of culture: connection between tool-making activity and the genesis of human sociality, the role of speech in the execution of the higher mental functions, formation of representation and the generalized reflection of the reality, connection between image-making activity and symbolization. It is argued that there are three premises for the genesis of consciousness and human creativity: tool use, collective ritual and graphic making. Originally all of these premises coincided with hominid evolution and reached its highest development in Homo sapiens. It is important that such forms of activity presuppose certain scheme of the subject activity. In other words, these forms of activity lead to appearance of symbol, i.e. to appearance of a thing, which, in turn, represents something other than itself. That is, representation is the ideal, finished product of symbolic perception. The speech being anchored in the representations of mind becomes the foundation for reflection and imagination. The article explains creative activity as production of new forms of action and defines creativity as an action which reveals ideality in products of creative activity.

Key words:: creativity, symbolic behavior, symbol, imagination, anthropogenesis, tool use, ritual, prehistoric graphics.

Creativity of mythological Thinking

This article discusses some possible ways meaning is produced in the mythological thinking. The point is, that in archaic consciousness the reality is represented as a unity of indistinguishable objects which are not countered by the subject. Mythological perception is never based on the recognition of the known or on the anticipation of the new. Rather, every other look at familiar objects makes visible their new qualities and invisible properties. Unexpected comparisons between disparate things, random and affective associations give rise to new meanings. All in all, there is a surplus of meanings in the mythological thinking. It is argued, that modernist artists of the early 20th century had a similar yet not identical practice of using such perceptual experience to wittingly destroy common logical connections, which leads to a conclusion that one can create a new semantics by stressing the unexpected qualities or meanings of the familiar images.

Key words: emotional perception, mythological thinking, mythological image, semantics, generation of meanings.

Theories of Creativity: fundamental Abstractions

The presented article is a study of the fundamental abstractions which lie underneath the theory of creativity. The investigation of these abstractions took place on three levels: ontological, axiological and on the level of worldview. On the ontological level three different relationships of tradition and innovation are distinguished: interactionism, reductionism andthe dialectic between tradition and innovation. The level of worldview presents three forms of creativity: contemplative creativity, activist one and the co-evolutional form of creativity. On the level of axiology the opposition between creativity and stimulation is described and studied.

Key words: Creativity, tradition, innovation, ant interaction, reductionism, dialectics, contemplative, activist, co-evolution, simulation.

The Essence of Creativeness and its Types

The article aims to provide an analysis of certain aspects of creative power. It focuses on the several different approaches to the following questions: who is the bearer of the creative power? What are the main peculiarities of its appearance, formation possibility and methods? Looking at different answers to these questions helps to arrive at conclusion that it is wrong to see creativeness as a certain ability. Rather, creative power might be summarized as a kind of striving or even intentionality which has a wide “range” of cogni-tion and various resulting effects. It appears to be evident that different types of person’s intentionality will result in different kinds of creativity. Moreover, one can differentiatetwo kinds of creativeness. An “intensive” creativity which is characteristic for mythological thinking, and extensive creativity, which is a feature of the scientifically oriented consciousness. Intensive creativity strives for ontological foundation by means of Revelation, and creates reality which is not identical with empirical reality. Such creativeness has an existential character, and is directed towards “inside”,“inner depth”. Extensive creativity, on the contrary, strives to analyze em-pirical reality. In other words, it reveals the laws of the interaction in-between objects in order to change the material world. The article argues that the intensive creativity is the foundation for the Eastern type of thinking, whereas behind the Western worldview lies the extensive creativity. However, in the final analysis both of them are united as the two sides of the same coin. Disregarding one or another type of creativity leads to a misbalance in both personal and social development.

Key words: Creativity, creativeness, creative individual, culture.

Social Creativity of Culture

Does the global world reproduce cultural diversity or does it rather lead to social entropy, condemning the traditional cultures to a bitter struggle for survival? The article discusses creativity as a driving force behind both socio-cultural diversity and various ways of historical development. That is, creativity is realized in technologies which culminate and renew our social experiences, and in a multitude of our reflections on the meaning of life. By addressing the cultural model of the Ancient Greece one can outline the paradigm of the innovative development and “compulsory social creativity”. The article argues that using the theoretical advantages of the “social code” introduced by M. K. Petrov it is possible to show that the aspirations to victory and success, which are so characteristic for the agonistic European personality, are rooted in the certain cultural patterns and values: rationalism, individualism, self-realization. These patterns and values inevitably come into collision with the value systems of the traditional cultures.

Key words: creativity, culture, typology, sociality, self-consciousness, personality, social code, reason, science, education, agonism, glory, rationalism, individualism, freedom, modernization.

The creative Nature of the Ideal

The article analyses the concept of the Ideal in the history of culture. The author suggests that the nature of the Ideal can only be understood in its correlation with the Idol. It is argued, that the structure of the creative nature of the Ideal consists in the unity of the values such as Truth, Goodness and Beauty, as well as in the feelings correlated to these values. In conclusion, author claims that the Ideal itself can be grasped as the past experience of Truth, Goodness and Beauty. Hence comes ourpermanent attention to our past, our idealization of it.

Key words: Ideal, Idol, Truth, Goodness and Beauty, the past, the human experience.

Innovative Potential of Personality: theoretical Bases and Approaches to Study

Creating Systems of Innovation is one of the most actual challenges of the present-day. Not only is it important because of its pure economic aspects or advantages, but also because Innovation Systems presuppose development of the human capital. That is, it is not an exaggeration to say, that the innovative potential of personality becomes the central element of any Innovation System. The point is, that the exact place of a creative personality in the System’s structure is still not defined. In principle, it is possible to define and clarify this role of a creative personality with the help of the interdisciplinary approach. The presented article argues, however, that any interdisciplinary me-thodology requires careful specification, and presents an analysis of the different theoretical and methodological approaches involved in the study of the innovative potential of personality.

Key words: Innovations, personality, innovative potential, theoretical approaches.

Creativity, in a broad sense, means the realization of human’s creative potential as both Creator and creation of culture, whereas, in a narrow sense, creativity can be defined as the pure ability to produce artifacts. At the same time, the point here is not to find another definition of culture, but to clarify and establish culture’s essential core as the source of creativity. From the perspective of the axiology of culture, the foundations of culture are values which exist only for humans. There are three Supreme Mysteries of Being interconnected within humans: Life - Consciousness - Spirit. All of them refer to the potential spiritual energy of the infinite Universe of Life. Values manifested in the human beings are truths of Spirit, which make them an intermediary conductor of the Spirit’s principles in the sphere of human consciousness and existence. However, all values exist as polar oppositions (good - evil, etc), which means that there is a confrontation within values, and the negative side of values is the source of human’s alienation from self, society and culture. That is, the real source of creativity is exactly this opposition within values. In this sense, culture, as the realization of values, is not a “totality” of them, but a process in which values overcome their dark antipodes from the sphere of alienation. The article argues, that the axiology of culture is not mere an approach to study culture, but rather both the initial methodological principle of such study and the genuine self-consciousness of the present stage in culture’s historical development.

Key words: culture, creativity, value, alienation, axiology, consciousness, spirit, man, being.

Creativity of Culture: Time and Beyond Time

The article is devoted to the problem of coexistence of time and culture. Three levels of their interaction and interdependence are discussed throughout the paper: chronological level, level of values and transgressive level. The first chronological level is connected with the formation of sequences of events and processes occurring in culture. Level of values deals with the connection of the concrete moment of time with culture’s ideal values and goals. Finally, on the transgression level happens transition which leads culture beyond time. That is, this transgression allows culture to step out of the limits of time and reach the level of eternity - level of the spiritual integrity existing beyond time. The article presents and develops author’s own concept of value-informational understanding of time.

Key words: time, culture, present time, interruption (gap), border, now, meaning, eternity.

Folk Culture as a Creative Resource of Human Identification

The article is devoted to the analysis of main characteristics of popular culture and its interrelations with folk culture. In the face of modern social and cultural risks one can observe the increasing weakening of national and cultural identity. The article argues that some of the main characteristics of the popular culture (heterogeneity, openness, dynamism, syncretism, dialogism, stability, coherence and complementarily etc) are supported by the preceding folk culture. That is, folk’s culture group solidarity, accent on direct communication, regulative behavior style etc find its expression in the popular culture. Through popular culture individuals realize their belonging to a specific social and cultural environment with which they can identify themselves.

Key words: folk and popular culture, the principles of folk culture, education, creative life, mentality, traditions, norms and customs.

“The Learned Cat” in Russian and World Culture

It is not an accident that images of sly, cunning cats take that much space in the history of Russian and world culture. For instance, the cat in the Charles Perrault’s fairy tale is the best and most use-ful part of the protagonist's inheritance. This cat embodies the highest achievements of the European culture of the 17th century: nobility of a knight, spirit of enterprise, creative imagination. At the same time, it is not possible to imagine Robinson Crusoe without the company of cats, which reflects and symbolizes a link between civilization and wildness. One can also mention Hoffman’s novel “The Life and Opinions of the Tomcat Murr” which illustrates a struggle between romanticism and realism by the example of a conflict between a cat and its master. All in all, there is a multitude of images of cats in the novels of E.A. Poe, S. Pushkin’s work, in the N.Gogol’s mystic novels, in the poetry of A. Fet, etc. The presented article aims to provide an analysis of the images of a “learned cat” in the literary works mentioned above.

Key words: image of cat, learned cat, smart cat, history of literature, Russian culture, world culture.

Philosophical and artistic systems in the 19th century culture: to the problem of interrelations

The complex dialectical relationship between philosophy and artcan rarely be seen distinctly outside of the general cultural context. One can distinguish two different readings of such relationships on the example of the late 19th century. The first reading ofsuch relationship suggest that links between art and philosophy should be drawn sharplyand even simplistically. The example of such reading would be the usual interpretation of the connection between the positivist philosophyand the literary naturalism.Philosophical systems are traditionally understood as methodological foundations for the literary systems.Although given the general cultural context one can never determine the exact relation between them. This relation might rather be seen as a multitude of connotations created by asingle cultural pulse. In other words, connotations between the positivism and naturalism reflect their common ground - trends and problems of the late 19th century. In this way, it is more accurate to suggest that a single positivist worldview is the foundation for both positivism and literary naturalism. The second reading of the philosophy and art relations is to the contrary focused on the non-detection of the interrelations and connections between them. One can thinkabout usually omitted resemblance between impressionist painting and“philosophy of life”. They are both usually contextualized within irrational “Dionysian” culture. However, one can sug-gest that impressionism did reflect a birth of the new world perception. This perception was further developed in the symbolism and later conceptualized in the “philosophy of life”. In other words, here philosophy and art are involved in the different stages of the process which basically creates anew world view.

Key words: culture of the 19th century, interrelations, philosophy, art, positivism, naturalism, impressionism, “philosophy of life”.

Reflexivity of personality identification in the art culture of the XX century

The complex process of personal self-determination is a characteristic feature of the modern culture, and it generates a high level of personality’s reflexive activity. This reflexive search for meaning and for vital imperatives often leads to a revaluation of values. In other words, the uncertainty of the modern society and its conflict with person stimulate striving for reflexive self-identification. It is crucial that in such reflection an identity of the subject and thinking object is observed, which, in turn, presupposes the formation of the sensual truth. One can find this focus on the present, this exclusive attention to the individual feelings in various forms of modern art as well. In many respects it corresponds to the P.Sorokin’s vision of the contemporary sensual culture. This culture, argues Sorokin, forms a certain style or type of art which is free from any super-sensual symbolism. The article argues that the result of the mentioned strive for the personal self- identification is the search and discovery of the new truth, whereas the modern art is rather focused only on establishing the relative relations, but never seeks the whole truth, which leads to a conclusion that the modern art is indeed in a state of crisis.

Key words: reflexive thinking, personality identification, sensual type of culture, relative values, art culture, modern art.

Current strategies for interdisciplinary study of art: Arthur Danto’s philosophy of art

To define what art is today is a very complicated task. The article argues, that it is fruitful to try not to give an objective definition of art, but rather to focus on understanding why, faced with certain pieces of art, we indeed perceive them, even if randomly and subjective, as genuine works of art. One can try to formulate such understanding using Arthur Danto’s philosophy of art, which explains contemporary art not only merely as an artistic action, but also sees it as an expression of philosophy or philosophical action.

Key words: Philosophy of Art, Art theory, Arthur Danto, contemporary art.
